The next year it continued to drop and went to 20.1 percent. In 1936 and 1937 the Unemp continued to drop to 16.9 percent and 14.3 percent showing a great turn around for our economy but as soon as Recession started the rate went up i n 1938 to 19.0 percent. With Recession ending the Unemp went back down to 17.2 percent turning the country back in the right direction. This paper will examine how Americans have been socialized in islamophobia within the United States. Islamophobia is defined as the unfounded hostility towards Muslims, and therefore fear or dislike of all or most Muslims. The first time islamophobia was introduced as a concept was in November 1997 by the Runnymede Trust Report. The report was the first time islamophobia was discussed, based on British Muslim populations, to better conditions for Muslims. In response to the report, â€Å"the Government approved the first state funding for specifically Muslim schools in late 1997, and there has been some improvement in media portrayals of Islam.† (â€Å"Commission on British Muslims†) Islamophobia is indeed similar to xenophobia, the fear of foreignness and unfamiliarity, but is specific to the religion of Islam. Islamophobia has lead to discrimination, prejudices, assault, and hate crimes. It is interesting to analyze the changes of islamophobia. The American public has become socialized to believe that the muslim population is synonymous with terrorists who crashed the world trade center twelve years ago. Although through the last year statistics have shown a decrease in islamophobia such that, â€Å"CAIR rates islamophobia as a 5.9 on a scale of one to 10, with one representing an America free of Islamophobia and 10 being the worst possible situation for Muslims. In 2010, CAIR rated the state of Islamophobia in America as a 6.4.† This is a .5 decrease. However, America still has a long way to go to become a true â€Å"melting pot† accepting all religions. Just over a year ago, Park 51, a Islamic community center opened near the site of where the terrorist attacks of September 11th occurred. There was a huge controversy and very many people were against it, as one might imagine. Many felt like it was insensitive and wrong, although the community center is inviting to all faiths. The center has many facilities including a swimming pool, basketball court, library, auditorium, a September 11th memorial, and also a mosque. The mosque caused the most controversy. Even to the point where President Obama commented stating that the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan. From doing so other politicians, such as Newt Gingrich slurred back that obama is â€Å"pandering to radical Islam.† When obviously this was not the case. The community center was completely legal and peaceful. The media has a large influence on Islamophobia. Many are aware that the media does influence our thoughts and beliefs, but if we are to take that a step further, we see that it seems as though the media perpetuating islamophobia to gain money. A report by The Council on American-Islamic Relation shows, â€Å"The inner core of the U.S.-based Islamophobia network enjoyed access to at least $119,662,719 in total revenue between 2008 and 2011.† Which explains that television networks who are contributing into instilling this fear into their viewers are gaining a profit by doing so. It has been stated that, Islamophobia, ‘mainly exists within right-wing media circles. And while it acknowledges that not all of the people and groups in its report ‘have promoting fear of Islam as their primary purpose,’ they allow the ‘Islamophobia network access to further financial resources and a wider audience.’ † (Feldman) The networks involved with encourag ing the public of the United States to fear Islam include: Fox News, The Christian Broadcasting Network, and The Washington Times. (â€Å"Legislating Fear†) These are mainstream media outlets. It is unfortunate, that Islam is being targeted as a means of profit within the media. It is also shocking that theâ€Å"leaders of the Islamophobia network are generally well-compensated for their efforts, often enjoying salary increases that far surpass those anticipated by members of the general workforce.† (â€Å"Legislating Fear†) Quite literally, those exposed to networks are being negatively influenced and introduced to prejudice. People speak on behalf of Islam without background in Islam or a good understanding of Islam. People speak about Islam without any contact with Muslims themselves. Religious ignorance has become common, â€Å"nonetheless, Americans remain profoundly ignorant about their own religions and those of others.† Which only enhances religious discrimination. Ignorance leads to false beliefs and misunderstandings. Even publics schools in the United States are discouraged from facilitating conversations about religion. Although this does not create islamophobia, it does indeed impact how it is perpetuated. Without knowledge and understanding, how can one formulate an educated opinion? Instead we have Islamophobia deriving from a misunderstanding of a religion, and hatred. We must stray away from being socialized by the media, maintaining religious ignorance, following orientalist stereotypes, contributing to hate crimes and prejudice. We as a country must recognize that September 11th was an act of extremism, not an act of Islam. If Americans continue to believe that extremist terrorists are synonymous with Muslim Americans, we will soon ironically enough become extremist in prejudice, and discrimination. In this article, I'll give you an overview of the policies that exist at different colleges when it comes to reviewing ACT scores in the admissions process. The Basics Most schools will focus on composite score values when considering your ACT scores.Schools that require the optional ACT Writing section will usually look at your Writing score separately or in the form of the English Language Arts (ELA) subscore (which is the average of your scores on the English, Reading, and Writing sections).Some admissions committees will look at subscores in the different subject areas based on the student’s academic interests and application strengths. This is not just some small part of your application, like a controller in a Rails application, this is the entire thing. (Wisconsin 2006). Although the rates for high school completion between whites and minorities seem to be slowly equaling out, a 1999 report from the U. S. Department of Education showed that nationwide while 27. 5% of whites had received a Bachelor’s degree, only 12. 2% of blacks had attained that same level of education (Wisconsin 2006). In the State of Wisconsin, 15. 8% of whites have a Bachelor’s Degree, while only 6. 9% of blacks have the same, only about half of the nationwide percentage for blacks. (Demographic Profile 2004). In the Wisconsin school districts, the most important reason for the disparity in education between blacks and whites seems to be centered once again on socioeconomic ills. In 1954 the U. S.   Supreme Court unanimously agreed that segregating schoolchildren by race was unconstitutional, however fifty years later, while the ideas and decisions of 1954 seem fairly straightforward, the reality of the situation is a little less clear. In the Milwaukee area, the portion of the population that is black or Hispanic is rising, and the gap between black and white in Wisconsin as a whole is among the largest in the United States. A significant loss is experienced in the economy with regards to the desired impacts of the project, while on the other hand such practices promote corruption. Oyer (2005) observes that conflicts of interest in the management of tenders in the Philippines have led to an economic decline that has seen the country being overtaken by Thailand despite of having been ahead of it in the last five decades. In the economies where c onflicts of interest are pronounced, transparency and accountability are concealed from public scrutiny. To avoid the undesirable consequences of conflicts of interest, those involved in tender management should be thoroughly researched to establish if they are personal interests that may hamper the tendering process. Any relationship between the client and bidders needs to be investigated to thwart conflict (Gallagher, 2005). If a person in the tendering process is found to promote conflicts of interest, he/she should be disqualified from participating. In some instances when disqualification of a person is impossible, a conflict of interest can be managed through involving a third party to control the conflict. However, setting up of a code of ethics in tender management is the most significant tool to guide the tendering process. This is because if the code of ethics is adhered to, it can promote professional etiquette thereby preventing extra-professional affairs that may cause conflicts of interest (Ferrell & Fraedrich, 2009).
